The Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH) is a leading public research center in Luxembourg for basic, pre-clinical and clinical research in biomedicine and public health. The Department of Population Health (DoPH) is an interdisciplinary department that focuses on research in epidemiology, public health and clinical research across a wide range of fields. The DoPH oversees epidemiological studies, clinical trials, and experimental investigations of chronic diseases.

Epidemiologist for the National Cancer Registry

2 year fixed-term contract (with very likely renewal), full-time, entry date: ASAP

In 2013, the LIH has been mandated by the Ministry of Health to set up a nationwide population-based cancer registry. The National Cancer Registry (RNC) is a systematic, continuous, exhaustive and non-redundant collection of data for each new case of cancer (excluded non melanoma skin cancer). The RNC is aimed at providing an objective analysis of cancer evolution in Luxembourg, and enables health care professionals and public authorities to better assess the quality of care provided to patients suffering from cancer. Further goal is to evaluate prevention campaigns and national cancer screening programs. In the medium term, the registry will serve as a tool to evaluate whether the National Cancer Plan is achieving its objectives. One of the purpose of the RNC is to be an infrastructure dedicated to epidemiological and clinical research in oncology.

The RNC team is composed of a Scientific Director, an Operational Director, an epidemiologist, a data-manager, two IT developers and a statistician.


Main Responsibilities

Under the responsibility of the Operational Director, the epidemiologist of the RNC ensures the quality of data acting as key-contact and mentoring person for the Data Managers Cancer (DMC), who are responsible for collecting and coding data in the hospital-based cancer registries. He / she actively participates in the production and dissemination of results of the RNC.


Key Accountabilities

  • Write and update the recording manual of tumours, according to international standards, recommendations and classifications.
  • Mentor the team of DMC (12 persons) by preparing and organizing basic and advanced training, and one-day DMC workshops ten times a year.
  • Participate in various steps of validation and quality control of the RNC database.
  • Ensure adherence to international rules and recommendations for cancer registries and to standard operating procedures related to RNC data management.
  • Propose and develop new operating procedure and technical protocols.
  • Participate in writing the statistical analysis plans.
  • Contribute actively in data analysis and writing of the statistical reports.
  • Propose and write scientific communication (abstract, oral presentation and articles).
  • Ensure monitoring of scientific literature on international recommendations about cancer registries and on epidemiological methodologies applied to cancer registries database.
  • Participate in the organization and facilitation of the working groups of clinicians as well as the Scientific and Codification Committees of the RNC.
  • Participate in the development of RNC communication tools (leaflets, posters, flyers and newsletter).
  • Ensure the updating of the RNC website (public and professional part).
  • Participate in the organization of conferences and congress within the framework of the RNC.
  • Contribute to the drafting of activity reports and “cahier des charges".


Key Skills, Experience and Qualifications

  • Master/PhD in epidemiology, a medical background with specialization in Public Health Medicine would be an asset.
  • Experience in cancer epidemiology and / or in disease registry would be an asset.
  • Good oral and written communication skills,
  • Good organizational and relational skills, autonomy, responsibility, rigor.
  • Respect the professional secrecy and the confidentiality of all the information brought to his/her attention during the performance of his/her duties.
  • Respect the ethical standards and the code of good conduct that are generally accepted in the profession, regardless of whether they are enshrined in a legal text.
  • IT skills: SPSS, Microsoft office.
  • Language skills: Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing in French and good knowledge in English; knowledge of Luxembourgish/German would constitute an asset.
